| Bull Brow, restored in September 2013 |
Rochdale town centre considerably developed
during the Industrial Revolution, however Rochdale is a town of which history
goes back to the Medieval times. The town centre has inherited a network of historic streets that have connected the principal streets for hundreds of years; these are known as the 'Ginnels'. These streets have a strong historic
and architectural character and contribute positively to the Rochdale Town
Centre Conservation Area in which they are located.
PROJECT
As a network of pedestrian pathways, the ginnels have a considerable
potential to enliven the town centre. I produced ‘The Ginnel Strategy
in Rochdale Town Centre ’ in order to enhance our understanding of the history of the
ginnels, identify the issues they are facing and to give recommendations for improvement in the form of 3D visuals and a detailed schedule of works.
METHODOLOGY
I undertook extensive site visits, historic analysis and research to inform the Ginnels Strategy.
I undertook extensive site visits, historic analysis and research to inform the Ginnels Strategy.
RESULTS
This led to the approval of a pilot project in the town centre for the restoration of two ginnels - Bull Brow and the Butts Avenue - following the recommendations provided in the strategic document. The works were completed in October 2013, and a positive feedback was received from the locals.
